The British Airways Visa Signature® Card from Chase offers 50,000 bonus Avios after you spend $3,000 on purchases within the first 3 months from account opening. Plus earn an additional 50,000 bonus Avios after you spend $20,000 on your purchases within your first year of account opening. That’s up to 100,000 bonus Avios for this first year. We value these bonus Avios to be worth an average $1,500.
The British Airways credit card was designed for loyal British Airways customers who enjoy strategizing to get the most value out of their Avios. But be forewarned, the surcharges on certain reward tickets can be pretty steep. Luckily, this card is also useful for booking on partner airlines with your rewards.
There are three airline branded cards issued by Chase that earn Avios rewards. All three cards have similar bonus offers and ongoing rewards. With any of the cards, you’ll earn Avios rewards for purchases on all three airlines and you can redeem Avios on all three airlines. Each card has perks slightly different from the others. Here are the cards and the region where they are headquartered:
- Aer Lingus Visa Signature® Card – Ireland
- British Airways Visa Signature – United Kingdom
- Iberia Visa Signature® Card – Spain
*British Airways Visa Signature is issued by Chase Bank. Chase also offers great sign-up bonuses for their Checking/Savings accounts.

British Airways Card – Earn Up To 100,000 Avios
Earn 50,000 bonus Avios after you spend $3,000 on purchases within the first 3 months from account opening. Plus earn an additional 50,000 bonus Avios after you spend $20,000 on your purchases within your first year of account opening.
100,000 Avios are worth around $1,500 per our valuations (more on this below). That figure seems high when compared to other top credit card bonuses. But you also have to spend a lot more to get the full value.
Here are some ideas to increase your monthly spending:
What Are British Airways Avios Worth?
Avios are British Airways’ rewards points. They’re a currency shared with a couple other airlines (see below).
Like many other airline-branded credit cards, the value of your Avios depends on how you use them. On average, each Avios is worth around $0.015. Using this figure, 100k Avios have an approximate $1,500 value.
You can redeem your Avios for:
- Hotel stays
- Car rentals
- Seat reservations & upgrades
- Inflight M&S food & beverages
To maximize the value of your Avios, redeem them for short-haul flights, where the surcharges are more reasonable (taxes, fees, carrier charges). All other options will devalue your Avios. You’ll want to avoid redeeming for transatlantic flights on British Airways due to huge surcharges on reward tickets. There have even been settled lawsuits regarding these high taxes and fees.
The good news is, you can get great value with your earned Avios when booking through their partner airlines. For travelers willing to take the time to strategize redemption, this card may be a better fit.
By the way, your Avios will expire if you don’t collect, spend, share or purchase any for 36 consecutive months.
British Airways Card Top Features
British Airways is a part of the Oneworld airline alliance. So you can use your Avios to book flights with member airlines.
|American Airlines||British Airways||Cathay Pacific|
|Royal Air Maroc||Royal Jordanian||S7 Airlines|
|SriLankan Airlines||Fiji Airways (oneworld connect)|
British Airways also partners with Alaska Airlines, Aer Lingus and Iberia. In fact, the latter two airlines also use Avios as rewards points.
Earn a Travel Together Ticket when you charge at least $30,000 in purchases to your card in one calendar year. It covers the fare of one other person (excluding taxes, fees or carrier charges) for the same flight and cabin.
This perk applies to all classes of flights, including international first class, which can save you thousands of dollars. The booking must be a reward flight on a British Airways mainline flight originating in and returning to the United States.
You’ll have 2 years to redeem this companion fare.
Make purchases abroad without worrying about foreign transaction fees with the British Airways Visa Signature Card.
If you have allegiance to British Airways, and you spend over $30,000 annually, this can be a great card for your wallet. Traveling frequently with the airline can easily negate the annual fee. Especially if you qualify for the Travel Together Ticket.
That said, there are a couple card limitations to keep in mind:
- High surcharges. British Airways is notorious for implementing surcharges to the tune of hundreds of dollars on transatlantic reward tickets. Their offer terms even give this example: “Taxes, fees and carrier charges for travel from Seattle to London range from approximately $682-1250 per adult in economy or $1250 in business class.“
- Limited domestic flights. If you want to book a domestic flight, you can redeem with American Airlines and Alaska Airlines. If you choose to go with an Alaska Airlines flight, you may have to book your reward ticket over the phone.
